Does Galle Fort have an entrance fee in 2026? What is the best time to visit to avoid the heat?

I'm seeing conflicting info online. Some blogs say you need a ticket to enter Galle Fort, others say it's an open city.

We are staying in Unawatuna and want to visit for the afternoon. Is it free? Also, we are worried about the heat, is it too hot to walk on the ramparts at 3 PM? What is the ideal schedule?

This is the #1 question we get! Let's clear up the confusion immediately.

The Cost: Entry to Galle Fort itself is 100% FREE. It is a living city with schools, courts, and homes inside. You can walk in through the Old Gate or Main Gate 24/7 without a ticket.

Note: You only pay if you enter specific museums (like the Maritime Museum) or the Lighthouse stairs (if open).

The Heat Warning: Do NOT visit at 1:00 PM or 2:00 PM. The ramparts are made of granite and coral; they radiate heat, and there is zero shade. You will be miserable.

The Perfect "Expert" Schedule:

3:30 PM - Arrive: Start by wandering the narrow streets (Pedlar St, Church St) where it is shady. Browse the boutique shops and grab an iced coffee or gelato (try Isle of Gelato).

4:30 PM - History: Visit the Dutch Reformed Church (Wolvendaal) while it's still open.

5:15 PM - The Ramparts: Walk towards the Lighthouse.

5:45 PM - Sunset Spot: Head to Flag Rock Bastion (the southernmost point). This is the spot to watch the cliff divers and see the sun drop into the Indian Ocean.

6:30 PM - Dinner: Stay inside the Fort for dinner. The old Dutch Hospital building has great restaurants with ocean views.
