I want to climb Adam's Peak for the sunrise. I have read there are multiple starting points and the season matters. Which route is most popular - starting from Hatton/Nallathanniya or from Ratnapura? What time do I need to start to reach the summit for sunrise? How hard is the climb physically - I am a moderate hiker. What is the religious significance and are there any rules for visitors? How does it feel compared to other famous sunrise hikes?

Adam's Peak (Sri Pada — literally "sacred footprint") is one of the most extraordinary experiences in Sri Lanka and getting it right matters. Here is the complete guide.

Season: the pilgrimage season runs December to May. Outside this period, the summit is frequently cloud-covered and the views are obscured. The peak months for a clear sunrise are January to March. Do not attempt the climb in the monsoon months (June-November) — the path is dangerously slippery, the views will be entirely cloud, and some facilities are closed.

Which route: the Nallathanniya (Hatton) route on the north side is the main pilgrimage route and the one most tourists use. It is well-maintained with concrete steps all the way, lit at night, and has tea shops, toilet facilities, and rest points. The Ratnapura route on the south side is longer, harder, less frequented, and not lit at night. For a first-timer, Nallathanniya is the right choice.

What time to start for sunrise:
- From Nallathanniya, the climb takes 2.5-4 hours depending on your pace (7,000+ steps, approximately 1,100m ascent from the trailhead).
- Sunrise is roughly 6:00-6:30am in peak season (varies slightly month to month).
- Start at 2:00-2:30am for a comfortable pace and summit arrival by 5:30am. This is what most pilgrims do.
- Starting before midnight gives you the extraordinary experience of climbing with thousands of pilgrims in the dark, lanterns glowing — genuinely moving regardless of your faith.

Physical difficulty: it is steep but manageable for a moderate hiker. The steps are relentless. Coming down is harder on the knees than going up. Hiking poles are useful. Budget 1.5-2.5 hours for descent.

Religious significance: the site is sacred to four religions simultaneously — Buddhists revere the footprint as the Buddha's, Hindus as Shiva's, Muslims as Adam's first step after leaving Eden, and Christians as St Thomas the Apostle's. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) at the summit shrine. Remove footwear at the summit temple.

Indika's guide is comprehensive. Practical additions: the guesthouses in Nallathanniya village at the base of the trail provide early wake-ups, packed meals, and torches for rental. Staying there the night before (rather than driving up from Kandy at 1am) is strongly recommended. The road to Nallathanniya from Hatton is winding and takes 40 minutes — arrive the day before, settle in, sleep, then start the climb at 2am rested. Also bring warm layers: the summit at 5-6am in January-February is genuinely cold (5-12°C), a stark contrast to the lowland heat.

One experience note: the "shadow of the peak" phenomenon at sunrise is one of the most famous optical effects in Sri Lanka. In clear conditions, as the sun rises, Adam's Peak casts a perfect triangular shadow over the landscape that slowly contracts towards the base of the mountain as the sun climbs. Pilgrims and visitors specifically gather at the summit to witness this — it lasts only about 20-30 minutes and is genuinely extraordinary. If you arrive at the summit before dawn and the sky is clear, you will see it. If clouds come in, you will not. It is partly a matter of luck and partly about choosing January-March when clear mornings are more reliable.
