Sri Lanka ETA vs visa on arrival - what is the difference and how do I apply correctly?

I keep seeing conflicting information about whether I need to apply for an ETA online before travelling or if I can get a visa on arrival at the airport. I am from Bangladesh and I am not sure which category I fall into. Can you explain the difference between the ETA and visa on arrival clearly? How much does each cost, how long is it valid for, and can I get a double-entry visa? Is the official government ETA website the only safe place to apply or are third-party sites okay?

This is the most common question I get and the confusion is understandable because the terminology has changed. Let me explain clearly.

What the ETA is: the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is the pre-approval required for most nationalities before travelling to Sri Lanka. It is applied for online at the official government website (eta.gov.lk) and approved electronically — you do not get a stamp or sticker, just an approval email. You show this at the immigration desk along with your passport.

Cost and validity: the standard tourist ETA costs USD 35 (or equivalent) for double-entry and is valid for 30 days per entry, extendable once in-country for a further 30 days through the Department of Immigration. Single-entry is also available at a slightly lower cost.

Who can get it: most nationalities including those from South Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia apply via the ETA system. A small number of nationalities (mainly Maldivian, Singaporean, and a few others) receive free visa-on-arrival.

Bangladesh specifically: Bangladeshi citizens are eligible for the ETA but should check the current list on eta.gov.lk as this can change. Apply at least 3-5 days before travel — approvals are usually very fast (often within hours) but do not leave it until the night before.

Third-party sites: the official URL is eta.gov.lk (Sri Lankan government). Many commercial websites mimic the official site and charge USD 50-100+ for the same ETA by adding a service fee. They are legal but unnecessary. Always use the official site directly. Pay close attention to the URL.

At the airport: immigration officers will ask to see your ETA approval email on your phone or printed. Have it accessible before you join the queue.

Pradeep's answer is accurate. One addition for anyone who might overstay: the ETA is strictly enforced and overstaying is taken seriously at immigration. If you want to extend beyond 30 days, go to the Department of Immigration and Emigration office in Colombo (Battaramulla area) before your visa expires. Bring your passport, ETA approval, and proof of accommodation. The extension adds another 30 days and costs around LKR 3,000-5,000. Do this with at least a week to spare before expiry.
