I have a DJI Mini (249g). Do I really need a permit? Blogs say it's a "toy."

I’m bringing my drone for vacation. In most countries, my under-250g drone is exempt from registration.

However, I’ve heard Sri Lanka has tightened the rules in 2026. Can I just fly it at Nine Arch Bridge, or will the police actually confiscate it? I don't want to lose my drone.

This is the most dangerous assumption tourists make. The "249g Toy Rule" works in Europe/USA, but not for foreigners in Sri Lanka.

The 2026 Reality: As of this year, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and Police are enforcing drone laws strictly.

The Rules: ALL drones brought by foreigners (regardless of weight) technically require Ministry of Defence (MOD) clearance and CAA Registration to be flown legally.

The Risk: Police at Nine Arch Bridge and Sigiriya are now trained to spot drones. If they catch you flying without the permit papers in your pocket, they will confiscate the drone and fine you.

Import Warning: Customs at the airport are also scanning bags. If you don't have the pre-arrival approval email printed out, they may seize the drone at the airport and hold it until you depart.

Advice: Apply for the permit 2 weeks before you fly (via the CAA website), or leave the drone at home. It’s not worth the stress.
