I have read about the elephant gathering at Minneriya and it sounds extraordinary. I want to understand it properly before planning a trip around it.

1. What exactly is the Gathering and why does it happen at Minneriya?
2. What months does it reliably occur and which month is the best?
3. Is Minneriya or Kaudulla the better park for seeing it?
4. How do I get to Minneriya from Colombo, Sigiriya or Polonnaruwa?
5. What are the jeep hire costs and park entry fees?
6. Is the Gathering genuinely as impressive as described or is it overstated?
7. At what time of day do the elephants gather at the tank?
8. What other wildlife will I see at Minneriya beyond elephants?

The Gathering is one of the most remarkable wildlife events in Asia and I will give you the complete accurate guide.

What it is and why it happens: the Minneriya tank is an ancient man-made reservoir built in the 3rd century by King Mahasena. As the dry season progresses from July onward, the water level drops and the grasslands around the tank edge are exposed. Wild elephants from across a wide area converge on these grasslands for the fresh green grass and the water. At peak they number 200-350 animals, making it one of the largest gatherings of wild Asian elephants on earth. This is completely wild behaviour, not a managed event.

Best months: July to October, peaking August to September. Outside this window the tank is fuller, the grass is less exposed, and the elephants disperse. You can see elephants at Minneriya year-round but the Gathering specifically is July to October.

Minneriya vs Kaudulla: they are adjacent parks and the elephants move between them. When the Minneriya tank is very full, the elephants shift to Kaudulla. Local guides and jeep operators know which park is currently better on any given day and will take you to the right one. Book through an operator in Habarana or Giritale who monitors the herd movements daily rather than booking from Colombo. Habarana is the standard base.

Getting there: Habarana is the base, approximately 3.5 hours from Colombo and 30 minutes from both parks. Jeep hire from Habarana for Minneriya costs LKR 7,000-9,000 for the vehicle. Park entry approximately LKR 5,000 for foreign visitors. Afternoon is the right timing for the Gathering, departing Habarana around 3pm for a 4-8pm safari window. The elephants come to the tank edge as the afternoon cools.

Is it as impressive as described? In peak season it is genuinely one of the most impressive wildlife sightings I have seen anywhere. 300 elephants in one field at sunset is not something you can easily describe. It exceeds most people's expectations.

Adding the practicality of combining with Polonnaruwa: the combination of Polonnaruwa Ancient City in the morning and a Minneriya Gathering safari in the afternoon is the most logical and rewarding single day in the Cultural Triangle. Both are accessible from Habarana or Giritale. Polonnaruwa from 6:30am to 11am, back to guesthouse for lunch, then depart for Minneriya at 2:30pm. This single day delivers 11th-century Buddhist architecture and one of the great wildlife spectacles of Asia. It requires an early start and a full day but it is one of the best-planned days I know of in Sri Lanka.
