I am trying to book the famous train ride from Colombo to Ella for next month. I see many different websites and prices. What is the official way to do this? Is it possible to buy them at the station on the same day, or do they always sell out?

The official and only government website for booking train tickets is seatreservation.railway.gov.lk. Do not use third party websites unless you are willing to pay a massive premium. Tickets open exactly 30 days in advance at 10:00 AM Sri Lanka time.

For the Colombo to Ella route, first class and second class reserved seats sell out within minutes of opening. You need to create an account on the official site beforehand, be logged in, and hit refresh the second the clock strikes 10:00 AM 30 days before your travel date.

If you miss out online, you have two options. First, you can buy third class unreserved tickets at the station on the day of travel. These never sell out, but you will likely be standing for a good portion of the 9 hour journey. Second, some local travel agencies buy blocks of tickets and resell them at a higher price. It is up to you if the markup is worth the guaranteed seat.

Just to add a tip if you cannot secure the full Colombo to Ella ticket. Try breaking the journey. Book Colombo to Kandy, spend a night there, and then book Kandy to Ella. Or even better, take a taxi or bus to Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) and just take the train for the Nanu Oya to Ella portion. That specific stretch is the most scenic part anyway, taking about 3 to 4 hours, and tickets are slightly easier to get than the full 9 hour ride.

One detail many miss: when booking on the official site, make sure your credit card supports 3D secure authentication. The payment gateway will send an OTP (one time password) to your phone. If your home SIM is not active to receive texts while you are booking from abroad, the payment will fail and you will lose the seats in the cart. Call your bank ahead of time to ensure it goes through smoothly.
