I know the east coast season is just beginning. Are boats actively going out from Uppuveli this week, and has anyone actually spotted whales in the past few days.

Yes, the boats in Trincomalee and Nilaveli have started operating this week. The sea is very calm right now. A few operators reported seeing blue whales yesterday morning. Your chances are very good. Go down to the beach at Uppuveli this evening and you can book a spot on a boat for tomorrow morning directly with the captains.

Just make sure you book a boat that follows proper ethical distance guidelines. Ask the operator explicitly if they respect the wildlife department rules before handing over your money.
