The fishermen at Koggala want 500 LKR for a photo. Are they real fishermen?
We stopped to see the famous Stilt Fishermen near Galle. As soon as I took my camera out, a guy ran over and demanded money.
He said the fishermen on the sticks wouldn't "fish" unless I paid. Is this a genuine tradition, or just a show for tourists?

I hate to break the illusion, but in 2026, Stilt Fishing is almost entirely a staged performance.
The History: It was a real method used during WWII when food was scarce.
The Present: Now, the men you see sitting on the sticks are actors. They climb up when they see a tour bus approaching. They do not catch fish; they catch tourists.
The Verdict: If you want that iconic Instagram photo, pay the 500-1000 LKR. Think of it as tipping a street performer. But don't expect a National Geographic documentary moment....it is a transaction.
