Planning a trip in July/August. Should I go to Mirissa or Arugam Bay? Confused about the monsoon!

I'm planning a beach holiday for late July. I really want to go to Mirissa and Unawatuna because I see them all over Instagram, but I read something about the monsoon season affecting the south coast then.

Will it be raining all the time in Mirissa? Should I head to the East Coast (Arugam Bay/Trincomalee) instead? We want sunny beach days and calm water for swimming.

You have done good research! Sri Lanka has two different monsoon seasons that hit opposite sides of the island at different times.

July/August in Mirissa (South): The South West monsoon is active here. While it usually doesn't rain all day (mostly sudden heavy showers), the ocean will be rough. Red flags will likely be up, making swimming dangerous, and the water won't be that crystal clear blue you see on Instagram. Many beach bars might be closed or renovating.

July/August in Arugam Bay/Trinco (East): This is the peak season for the East Coast. The weather will be dry, hot, and sunny. The ocean in Trincomalee (Nilaveli) will be like a swimming pool—perfect for snorkeling and diving. Arugam Bay will be buzzing with surfers and nightlife.

Recommendation: For a July trip, definitely head East (Arugam Bay, Pasikudah, or Trincomalee). You will get the tropical paradise vibe you are looking for. Save Mirissa for a trip between December and April!
