Renting a bicycle is absolutely the best way to explore the Polonnaruwa ancient city. The archaeological site is vast, flat, and connected by shaded dirt paths. You can easily rent a reliable bicycle from shops near the main ticket office for about two to three dollars a day.

Start your cycling tour very early in the morning. The ruins have very little shade, and the midday sun makes cycling quite exhausting.
