If your flight lands late at night, staying your first night in Negombo is highly recommended. The airport is actually located in Negombo, not Colombo. It is a quick 15 minute drive to the beach hotels, allowing you to rest immediately without a long city transfer in the dark.

Negombo also has great sunset views and seafood, making it a perfectly relaxing, stress free introduction to Sri Lanka before heading inland.
