If you only have one day, Polonnaruwa is generally easier to explore and more impressive for a quick visit as the ruins are grouped closely together.

The ancient ruins in Polonnaruwa are remarkably well preserved, making it an incredible experience to easily cycle through in just a few hours.

Anuradhapura is older and much larger. It is highly spiritual and active with pilgrims, but requires a vehicle and more time to truly appreciate everything.
