Achcharu pickles Sri Lankan varieties buying and tasting
3 Answers from travellers
Achcharu is Sri Lankan spicy-sour-sweet pickled fruit/vegetables. Main varieties: MANGO achcharu (unripe, most popular, tangy-sweet-hot), PINEAPPLE achcharu (sweetest, ideal starter), MIXED FRUIT achcharu (apple, olive, other), TEMPERAD veg (carrot, cauliflower). Bought at streetside vendors and shops citywide, 200-500 LKR per 200g cup.
Best commercial brand: Deviyo brand (sold in supermarkets, consistent). Village achcharu vendors (usually women with a wheeled cart) make the freshest — try before buying. Achcharu is bar snack, road-trip snack, and cure for post-monsoon-nausea. Warning: if very spicy sensitivity, ask for mild version.
