Working numbers, 2026. BACKPACKER (~25-40 USD/day): dorm bed 1500-2500 LKR (~7 USD), 3 meals at kade rice-and-curry + roti breakfast + kottu dinner ~2000 LKR (~6 USD), inter-city bus 400-800 LKR (~2 USD), 1-2 attractions/activities on average day (nothing on rest days, Sigiriya on splurge day) ~1500 LKR average, ONE beer or nothing 400-800 LKR. Realistic day: ~30 USD, splurge day with Sigiriya (5300 LKR entry): ~45 USD. MID-RANGE (~60-100 USD/day): private guesthouse room with AC 4000-8000 LKR (~20 USD), mix of local + tourist restaurants ~4000 LKR (~13 USD), tuktuks between local sights 2000 LKR (~6 USD), one paid activity 3000-6000 LKR, 2 beers or a cocktail 1500 LKR. Realistic day: ~70 USD. LUXURY (200-500+ USD/day): heritage/boutique hotel 25,000-90,000 LKR (~80-300 USD), fine dining 10,000-25,000 LKR (~30-80 USD), private chauffeur day 60-80 USD, spa/experience 100 USD+, wine at dinner. Realistic day: 250-500 USD depending on hotel choice.

CHEAP WINS to stretch any budget: (1) ETA visa is FREE for 40 nationalities in 2026 (huge). (2) Rice-and-curry at local kade 400-800 LKR for a full plate with 5-8 curries. (3) Inter-city buses 200-500 LKR vs 5,000+ for a chauffeur day. (4) Train 3rd class Kandy-Ella 500 LKR (bring cushion), reserved 2nd class 1,300 LKR. (5) Fruits from local markets, not hotel shops. (6) The Pekoe Trail is free to walk. (7) Most temples free or nominal entry. (8) Beaches free everywhere. A frugal backpacker can genuinely do 25 USD/day; add 5-10 for one splurge on rotating days.

Where the money HIDES: (1) National park entries - Sigiriya 5,300 LKR (~18 USD), Yala half-day safari 15,000-25,000 LKR (~50-80 USD including jeep+guide+entry+taxes), each cultural triangle site 4,000-5,000 LKR. Budget one splurge attraction every 2-3 days. (2) Chauffeur cost - 50-80 USD/day but eats the mid-range budget quickly. (3) Alcohol - a bottle of imported wine at a hotel is 8,000-15,000 LKR, cocktails 2,000-4,000 LKR. Sri Lanka is a cheap country UNTIL you drink. Local Arrack (300 LKR/shot) and Lion Lager stay affordable.

Sample 14-day mid-range: ~1000 USD ex-flights. Backpacker same trip: ~420 USD. Locked in, thanks!
