The Nallathanniya (Maskeliya) trail is the primary route ascended by over 90% of pilgrims climbing Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak / 2,243m). Spanning roughly 7 kilometers, the trail consists of approximately 5,200 uneven concrete and stone steps ascending 1,000 vertical meters. During the official pilgrimage season (December to May), the entire route is illuminated by continuous electric floodlighting powered by local hydro grids, and metal safety handrails line exposed stair sections. Numerous rest stalls (Dhadu Mandapaya, Seethagangula) provide hot tea, water, and snacks.
Average fitness hikers require 3.5 to 5 hours for the ascent; starting at 2:00 AM ensures arrival at the summit platform before sunrise at 5:45 AM.
Wear sturdy hiking shoes with ankle support; concrete steps become wet and slippery with heavy dew during pre-dawn hours.
