The sunrise shadow phenomenon (Ira Sevaya) at Adam’s Peak (elevation 2,243m) is an atmospheric optical projection. As the sun rises over the eastern horizon behind the mountain, parallel solar rays strike the symmetrical pyramidal pinnacle. Because the mountain rises sharply above low-lying western valleys filled with cold morning mist, the peak blocks sunlight and projects its shadow onto the horizontal surface of the condensation cloud layer. Due to perspective foreshortening and linear vanishing points, the shadow appears as an isosceles triangle projecting into the western sky, regardless of the irregular contours of the summit rock.

The shadow lasts for roughly 15 to 20 minutes after sunrise; as the sun climbs higher in the sky, the shadow compresses downward onto the mountain slopes before disappearing.
