Cover shoulders if you duck into the Maligawa courtyard before Diya Kapeema. Street is mixed; temple is not. Shoes off inside. hotel rooftop two streets back is street, so shoes on, but do not put your feet on a shop step like it is a sofa if the owner is there. Diya is a water-cutting ritual at 1:28 AM, not a second Grand Randoli. If you need sleep, skip it and do Dahawal at 2:18 PM. Do not invent a tourist ticket for it. Call the desk before you guess a late checkout.
Hotel two streets back, rooftop for the first hour, then down to hotel rooftop two streets back when we got greedy. Rooftop is a silhouette. Street is faces and brass. Pick which night you want which thing. Shoes you can stand in, not the pretty pair.
Road closures are real on the grid. Car in Kandy for Diya Kapeema is a hobby, not a plan. Bus or train in, tuk to the edge, walk. Then tea, then the room.
