Airbnb host asking for cash payment on arrival. Red flag or normal?

Red flag. Massive red flag. Real reason is they don't want Airbnb tax/records, not to save you fees. Two problems: (1) You lose Airbnb's guarantee/protection for that 50%. (2) If anything goes wrong, you have no recourse. Message Airbnb support, screenshot the conversation, and report the host. Book somewhere else. This is a known scam pattern - hosts do this then over-charge on arrival or add mystery fees.
^ 100%. Also this is technically illegal for the host under Sri Lankan tourism regs (all accommodations must be registered and taxed). Airbnb takes reports seriously. Cancel, get refund via platform, book with a legit host.
