Historically monumental. Aluvihare Rock Temple (Matale district, ~30 min from Kandy) is where the entire Buddhist Pali canon (Tripitaka) was first committed to writing on ola (palmyra) leaves in the 1st century BCE. Site has ancient cave temples with murals, working ola leaf workshops (watch scribes practice), and small museum. Free entry, small donation appreciated.
Watch monk-scribes prepare ola leaves — cleaning, drying, boiling, ruling and inscribing with an iron stylus. Book a demonstration slot ahead. Buy small ola leaf souvenirs (inscribed blessings, tiny manuscript replicas) for 500-2000 LKR. Combine with a Matale spice garden visit if time allows.
