The Bisokotuwa (literally "queen-enclosure" or valve-pit) was an extraordinary hydrological invention that predated European deep-water sluices by well over a millennium. By constructing an open vertical stone chamber inside the tank’s earthen embankment, incoming water under immense static pressure was diverted into the pit, where hydraulic turbulence and atmospheric aeration dissipated kinetic energy before the water exited through narrow stone conduits into irrigation canals. This stopped scouring vortices that would have liquefied and breached the core clay embankment.
