The drip-ledge (Katarama) is a ubiquitous architectural feature of ancient Sri Lankan Buddhist rock shelters dating from the 3rd century BC to the 1st century AD (such as Mihintale, Dambulla, and Vessagiriya). Master stonecutters climbed sheer cliff faces to chisel a deep horizontal groove along the overhanging rock brow. The cut consists of an inward-sloping groove 5 to 10cm wide with a sharp, acute undercut lower lip. As torrential monsoonal rainwater sheets down the cliff face, water reaches the sharp cut, breaking surface tension adhesion. Rainwater drops cleanly to the ground below as a curtain of drips, leaving the cave interior completely dry.

Immediately beneath the drip-ledge, stonemasons chiseled Early Brahmi donor inscriptions recording the gift of the cave to the Buddhist Sangha by royalty or merchants.
