The 6th-century Isurumuniya Lovers is a masterpiece of ancient Sri Lankan classical stone sculpture, housed in the museum at Isurumuniya rock monastery in Anuradhapura. Carved in high relief from fine-grained granite, it displays clear Indian Gupta artistic influence in its sensuous modeling and refined posture. Local royal folklore identifies the figures as Prince Saliya (son of King Dutugemunu) and his low-caste lover Asokamala, for whom he renounced the royal throne. Alternative archaeological interpretations suggest the relief depicts the Hindu god Shiva and his consort Parvati in divine repose.
