Anuradhapura vs Polonnaruwa - which if I have one day?

Polonnaruwa if you want compact, walkable/cyclable, well-preserved ruins in a small area - can be done in 4-5 hours. Anuradhapura is spread over huge area, requires transport between sites, more sacred (still active pilgrimage), 6-8 hours minimum for a real visit. For one day: Polonnaruwa is better - see more ruins, get a fuller sense of an ancient capital. Rent a bicycle at the entrance (500 LKR/day) - the way to see Polonnaruwa. Skip if you're ruin-fatigued.
Also: neither is essential if you're not a history/ruins person. Sigiriya + Dambulla is the more visually striking pair. Anuradhapura + Polonnaruwa are for deeper cultural triangle enthusiasts. Skip both if you'd rather more beach or hills.
