During the exact days of the Sinhala and Hindu New Year usually April 13th and 14th public transport is severely disrupted. The vast majority of bus drivers and train staff take leave to travel back to their home villages to celebrate.

The government does operate a very limited skeleton service of red CTB buses, but private buses practically vanish from the roads entirely. You should absolutely not plan any major cross country travel on these specific two days.

If you absolutely must travel, your only reliable option is to pre book a private taxi well in advance, and expect to pay a premium holiday surcharge for the driver sacrificing their festival time.
