I want to bring home authentic Ceylon spices as gifts. Should I buy them during my spice garden tour in Matale or wait until Colombo for cheaper market prices.

Spices are significantly cheaper at local markets than at Matale spice gardens. The garden shops charge premium tourist prices often two to three times higher than local market rates. A one hundred gram pack of pure Ceylon cinnamon sticks costs around three hundred rupees at Pettah but the same pack sells for eight hundred to one thousand rupees at spice gardens.

Visit the massive Dambulla wholesale market if you are passing through the cultural triangle. This is where restaurants and smaller shops buy their stock so prices are genuinely wholesale. You can buy whole cinnamon rolls, cardamom pods, cloves, black pepper, and nutmeg at rock bottom rates. Bring small reusable bags to carry your spice haul home.

For beautifully packaged gift ready spice boxes visit the Sri Lanka Export Development Board shop or Laksala government handicraft store in Colombo. These government stores guarantee authentic high quality Ceylon spices at fair fixed prices with no bargaining needed. The presentation boxes make perfect souvenirs for friends and family back home.
