I want to see baby turtles but I have heard mixed reviews about their conservation practices. Are they doing more harm than good by keeping them in tanks.

Many commercial hatcheries along the Galle Road are primarily tourist attractions rather than conservation centers. They often keep hatchlings in tanks for too long which weakens their natural instincts. If you want a truly ethical experience, visit the Rekawa Turtle Watch near Tangalle where you see them in the wild. If you must visit a hatchery, look for those that release the babies immediately after hatching and do not allow handling.

Be wary of any place that offers you the chance to hold a turtle for a photo. This is stressful for the animal and can transfer harmful bacteria. Real conservation is about protecting the nesting beaches, not just keeping babies in plastic tubs.
