Arugam Bay Elephant Rock: sunset viewpoint climb, lagoon crossing, and elephant caution?

Elephant Rock is a scenic granite outcrop located 4km south of Arugam Bay beyond Peanut Farm surf beach. It is famed as the premier sunset viewpoint on the east coast. Access requires hiring a tuk-tuk to the sandy track terminus, followed by a 15-minute walk across a shallow tidal lagoon and sand spit. The rock ascent takes 10 minutes up a steep, unbolted granite slab that requires comfortable footwear. From the summit, panoramic views stretch over the Indian Ocean breakers, remote coastal lagoons, and surrounding scrub jungle where wild elephants often emerge at dusk.
