Arugam Bay surfing season: Southwest monsoon offshore winds and point break wave refraction?

Arugam Bay on Sri Lanka’s dry east coast is internationally renowned as one of the world’s top surf destinations, operating during the Southwest Monsoon (May to October). While the western and southern coasts experience torrential rain and onshore winds during this window, the central mountain massif blocks moisture, sending dry, warm westerly winds across the dry-zone lowlands. These winds blow cleanly offshore (land-to-sea) all day long at Arugam Bay, creating glassy, perfectly groomed wave faces. Simultaneously, low-pressure storm systems in the roaring forties near Antarctica generate long-period groundswells that travel northward across the Indian Ocean, refracting neatly around Arugam Bay’s rocky headlands.
