Asking Ella homestays for packed lunches wrapped in banana leaves
5 Answers from travellers
It is highly encouraged! We call it a "Buth Packet". Homestay hosts love doing this because it adds a bit of extra income, and it is the most eco-friendly way to eat on the trail (no plastic containers). Just ask them the night before. They will pack rice, dhal, sambol, and a dry curry, tied up tightly in a fire-wilted banana leaf.
How much should we expect to pay for a packed lunch like this.
Usually around 600 to 1000 LKR depending on if they include chicken or keep it vegetarian.
The banana leaf actually infuses the rice with an amazing subtle flavor as it sits in your backpack.
Do not leave the banana leaf on the trail though! Even though it is biodegradable, the spicy food remnants can make wild animals sick. Pack it out.
