We are doing a full day hike to Ella Rock. Is it normal to ask our homestay host to pack us a traditional rice and curry lunch in a banana leaf.

It is highly encouraged! We call it a Buth Packet. Homestay hosts love doing this because it adds a bit of extra income, and it is the most eco-friendly way to eat on the trail. Just ask them the night before. They will pack rice, dhal, and a dry curry, tied up tightly in a fire-wilted banana leaf.

The banana leaf actually infuses the rice with an amazing subtle flavor as it sits in your backpack.

Do not leave the banana leaf on the trail though! Pack it out so wild animals do not eat the spicy leftovers.
