I want to see how real cinnamon is harvested and processed. Are there proper plantation tours?

The area around Galle and Matara has many cinnamon plantations. Some larger ones offer proper tours showing the peeling process, which is skilled work done by hand. Look for places that focus on cinnamon rather than general 'spice gardens'. The best experiences are often through smaller operators or directly with estates that export. You can see the difference between true Ceylon cinnamon and cassia. Some tours include a short boat trip through cinnamon islands in lagoons. Ask your guesthouse for recommendations for authentic operations rather than touristy stops.

The peeling process is fascinating to watch. Good tours let you try peeling a small piece yourself (it's harder than it looks).
