I want to eat the spicy, authentic Tamil food that the tea pluckers eat. Will homestay hosts in Haputale cook this for us, or do they only make mild tourist food.

They will happily make it, but you must explicitly ask for it! Tell your host "I want the real estate food, local spice level." They will make you incredible dishes like Ulundu Vadai, spicy potato curries, and massive plain rotis with fiery Lunu Miris. The estate Tamil cuisine is distinctly different and much spicier than standard Sinhalese rice and curry.

I asked for local spice level once and cried for 20 minutes. Be careful what you wish for!

Will they serve meat or is it strictly vegetarian.

Many Hindu estate families are strictly vegetarian, but they cook with so much flavor you will not miss the meat.

The fresh estate tea they serve with every meal is the best part.

Ask them to make you "Kothu" from scratch. Watching them chop it on the metal griddle is awesome.
