Ayurvedic oil massage got painfully rough mid-session — how do I stop politely without a scene?
Bentota spa, booked a single oil massage, not a full residential package. Therapist started fine then pressure went hard into my shoulder and I tensed up. I do not speak much Sinhala. Do people just say stop, raise a hand, or ask the desk to translate — and is ending early still charged as full?

Say stop clearly, raise an open hand, and sit up if you need to. Good therapists treat that as normal feedback, not an insult. You can also ask the desk or a receptionist to translate before you go in: softer pressure, or stop if I say stop. Ending early because of pain is not a scene — it is consent. Whether they refund a fraction depends on the place; many still charge the session you booked, some offer credit. I will not invent a fee schedule. If anyone guilt-trips you into enduring pain, leave and review honestly.
I said "stop, too hard" twice, sat up, and paid the single session. Therapist nodded and brought water. No drama.
Practicing the hand signal and a short English "softer please" before I go back for a lighter session. Thanks.
Same energy as food asks — clear, polite, early. Soft voice works better than suffering for politeness.
Asked the desk to write "light pressure" on the intake slip next time. Helped.
