At the terminus of the Main Line in Badulla, locomotives must be turned 180 degrees to face forward for the return climb toward Colombo. The station features an original 1920s 65-foot balanced girder rail turntable set within a circular brick-lined pit. The turntable balances on a central steel cone-roller pivot bearing. When an engine drives onto the table, the driver stops at the balance center where locomotive weight is distributed evenly across the center pivot. Two railway workers push horizontal wooden levers (sweeps) at the girder ends, manually rotating the 100-ton locomotive 180 degrees.
