Bambarakanda is the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka at 263 meters and I have not seen it on any standard tourist itinerary How do I actually get there from the hill country Is there a hike to the top and is it worth a half day detour

Worth the detour for any waterfall lover and one of the most underrated stops in the hill country. Bambarakanda sits in the Kalupahana area, about 1.5 hours from Haputale by road. The base viewpoint is a 10-minute walk from where vehicles park - dramatic but you only see the falls from below. The TOP hike (about 3 hours round trip moderately strenuous) climbs through pine plantations and tea estates to the rim where the river drops; the view from the top into the gorge is the real reward, plus you can see Ohiya and the southern plains on a clear day. Bring proper shoes, water, and start by 7am to beat afternoon clouds that often hide the upper falls. Flow is strongest after rain (March, October, November), thinnest in dry season (January-February). Do NOT swim at the top of the falls - the smooth rocks and current have killed inexperienced bathers. There is a safe pool partway down the trail where locals swim.
Doing the waterfall trio out of Haputale, 7am start, leech socks packed. Danke!
Combine with Lanka Ella Falls and Diyaluma Falls (both nearby) for a full waterfall day. Diyaluma has natural infinity pools at the top, safer than Bambarakanda for swimming.
Leeches in the pine forest after rain. Wear long socks tucked into trousers; cuts the encounter rate dramatically.
Did the waterfall trio in one day from Haputale: Bambarakanda + Diyaluma + Ravana. Long day but legendary.
