Bar Reef, located 12 nautical miles offshore from Kalpitiya, is Sri Lanka’s largest coral reef ecosystem, spanning over 300 square kilometers. However, destructive bottom-set gillnets and illegal blast fishing around the perimeter continue to present conservation risks. The Department of Wildlife Conservation and Sri Lanka Navy operate joint boat patrols, monitoring radar contacts to prevent encroachment into core no-take zones.
Diving and snorkeling Bar Reef is viable only during the calm inter-monsoon window from November to mid-April; monsoon swells turn the reef into a wall of breaking surf.
Underwater visibility regularly exceeds 25 meters during calm mornings, attracting large pods of spinner dolphins and blacktip reef sharks along the outer shelf.
