Body boards are widely rented from surf shops in Weligama, Mirissa and Hiriketiya — usually 500-1000 LKR per day for a foam boogie plus fins. Ask specifically since they're often stored behind stacks of surfboards. Great intro to wave-riding for kids and cautious adults.

Best beginner body boarding waves: Weligama main bay (soft shore break, sandy bottom, safe), and the inside section of Mirissa bay in the calm season. Avoid reef breaks (Kabalana, Marshmallows) which are for stand-up surfing.
