Check bed: pull back sheets, examine mattress corners for small brown spots (excrement) or live bugs. Bed frame joints, headboard back. Check pillows. Take photos of any suspected sightings. Move to fresh room immediately if found.

Prevention: pack silicone-coated protective mattress cover (packable), silk sleep sack. Encasing your bag near bed reduces bug 'hitchhiking'. Higher-quality hotels: much lower risk. Backpacker hostels: check carefully before unpacking. Photos of infestation critical for hotel accountability.
