Dedduwa Lake on the southern bank of the Bentota River estuary features extensive stands of red mangroves (Rhizophora mucronata) and black mangroves (Bruguiera sexangula). At low spring tide, water depths inside narrow secondary creeks drop below 20cm, exposing thick beds of looping knee roots and anaerobic mud. Touring kayaks must paddle strictly through marked central channels. Large Asian water monitors (Varanus salvator) bask along exposed mud banks between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM; paddlers should maintain a 4-meter buffer distance to avoid startling resting reptiles.
Use carbon touring paddles with narrow blades; wide spoon blades catch on underwater mangrove roots and twist wrists in shallow water.
The lake is designated an ecologically sensitive wetland basin; clearing mangrove prop roots for private boat moorings is strictly prosecuted.
