The Mangrove Palm or Water Coconut (Nypa fruticans / Gin Pol) forms dense shoreline fringes along the brackish middle reaches of the Bentota River estuary. Unlike terrestrial palms, Nypa possesses a subterranean horizontal branching rhizome that creeps through anaerobic tidal silt. The palm lacks an upright trunk, sending erect feathery pinnate fronds up to 8 meters tall directly out of the water. Nypa requires a precise estuarine salinity window between 5 and 15 PSU; it cannot survive in pure ocean water or purely stagnant fresh water. Its dense, interlocking underwater rhizome mats anchor soft riverbank silt against erosion.
