To escape the crowds in Galle Fort, explore the quiet residential streets near the northern ramparts, like Lighthouse Street and Parawa Street. They are lined with stunning, unrestored colonial homes that most tourists completely ignore.
You must visit the old Dutch Reformed Church early in the morning. The floor is paved entirely with ancient gravestones. It is incredibly peaceful and offers a profound sense of history away from the busy boutique shops.
Walk the ramparts on the eastern side facing the harbor instead of the ocean. It is usually completely empty, giving you a beautiful, quiet view of the local fishing boats and the naval base.
