The Knuckles Mountain Range is the ultimate off the beaten path destination near Matale. It is vastly wilder and much less visited than Ella or Nuwara Eliya. Hiking to the Mini Worlds End cliff drop offers stunning, completely silent views over the misty valleys.

Sembuwatta Lake is another incredible gem. Hidden deep within the Elkaduwa tea estates, this serene, pine fringed lake is rarely visited by international tourists and provides a perfectly tranquil nature escape.
