The best places to visit in Sri Lanka for first time travelers usually follow the classic loop. Start in the Cultural Triangle by exploring the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya and the ruins of Polonnaruwa. Next, travel to Kandy to see the sacred Temple of the Tooth. From Kandy, take the famous scenic train journey through the tea plantations to Ella. In Ella, hike Little Adams Peak and see the Nine Arch Bridge. After the hill country, head down to Udawalawe National Park for a wild elephant safari. Finally, relax on the beautiful south coast beaches in towns like Mirissa, Unawatuna, or Galle before returning to Colombo. This itinerary perfectly balances culture, wildlife, and tropical beaches.

For wildlife lovers visiting for the first time, Yala National Park is another must visit destination. It has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world. Booking a morning jeep safari there is an unforgettable experience to include in your two week plan.

Adding to Ruwanthis excellent itinerary, if you love surfing and a laid back vibe, consider adding Arugam Bay on the east coast. It is highly recommended if you visit between May and September. Also, do not skip exploring the historic Dutch architecture inside Galle Fort on your way back up the coast.
