Best snorkeling Hikkaduwa season - what's visibility like?
3 Answers from travellers
Hikkaduwa snorkeling season November-April. Peak visibility December-March: 8-15m clear water, reef fish, occasional sea turtles at Turtle Sanctuary. November is early season - decent but not peak. Reef itself is damaged from tsunami and coral bleaching but still viable for casual snorkeling. Better snorkeling actually at Pigeon Island (Nilaveli, east coast, May-Sept season) or Polhena beach (Matara, alternative to Hikkaduwa).
If you're going Hikkaduwa specifically: rent gear at the beach (500-1000 LKR), swim out from the beach (no boat needed for the main reef), see turtles in shallow water usually. Not world-class but pleasant. Manage expectations.
