Best Sri Lanka gem shopping - Ratnapura or Colombo?
3 Answers from travellers
Ratnapura = source (mines, cutters, wholesale prices) but requires expertise to avoid scams - locals target tourists. Colombo = established retailers with NGJA-certified stones and paperwork, 30-50% pricier but way lower scam risk. For serious buyer without local network: go to NGJA (National Gem and Jewellery Authority, Colombo) certified dealers. Trusted names: NGJA-registered dealers, Sifani Jewellers, Zam Gems. Always get a certificate before paying. NGJA offers walk-in gem testing for ~2000 LKR - use it before any big purchase.
Never buy in Ratnapura on a first visit without a local guide you trust. Colombo licensed dealer + NGJA verification is safest for a foreigner. Sapphire prices vary wildly by color/clarity/heat treatment - do your homework or you'll overpay.
