Peak water clarity on the south coast runs January to March, with visibility often 15-20m at Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary, Polhena and Weligama Bay. Mornings 7-10am are consistently clearer than afternoons because the sea has settled overnight and wind picks up midday. Avoid days right after heavy rain when river runoff clouds bays.
Hikkaduwa reef is the classic clarity spot but gets busy. Alternative picks: Polhena Beach in Matara (protected reef, small crowds, clarity often matches Hikkaduwa in season), and Rumassala reef off Unawatuna for turtles at good clarity. Avoid open ocean stretches with no reef structure — visibility drops.
