To avoid the intense heat, you should enter the ancient city exactly when the gates open at 7:00 AM. Exploring in the early morning is cool, peaceful, and offers the best lighting for photos.

You absolutely must avoid the midday sun between 11 AM and 3 PM. You have to walk barefoot on the stone courtyards around the stupas, and the stone gets hot enough to severely burn your feet during the day.

Alternatively, visiting late in the afternoon around 4:00 PM is also fantastic. This is when local pilgrims gather at the stupas to light oil lamps and chant, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere.
