January is genuinely peak season for the south and west coasts - dry, sunny, moderate humidity, calm sea for whale watching. Downside: highest prices (30-50% above shoulder), most tourists, book accommodation 2-3 months ahead. If you're flexible, late January to early February hits the sweet spot: same weather, slightly fewer crowds after New Year rush ends. East coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) is opposite - January there is windy and rough.
For the classic 'Colombo + south coast + hills + cultural triangle' route, January is ideal. Skip if you're headed to Trincomalee - wrong season. Book flights and top-tier hotels 3+ months ahead for January travel.
