Dry-zone Sandy Regosols and Red-Yellow Latosols suffer from low cation-exchange capacity and poor moisture retention. Converting woody biomass from invasive Mesquite (Prosopis juliflora) or coconut shells via oxygen-limited flame-curtain kilns (Kon-Tiki design) at 550-650°C yields stable, high-porosity biochar. The raw biochar must be "charged" or inoculated by steeping it in aged cow dung slurry, compost tea, or anaerobic bio-fertilizers for two weeks before soil incorporation to prevent it from binding existing soil nitrogen.
