I am doing a birdwatching tour in the hill country. Is it better to look for the rare migrant Kashmir Flycatcher in Victoria Park right in the city center or head to the Galway Land National Park.

Surprisingly, Victoria Park is actually one of the absolute best places in South Asia to spot the Kashmir Flycatcher during the migrant season. Despite being a public city park, the quiet stream area at the back is a haven for rare species, including the Pied Thrush and Indian Pitta. Galway Land is fantastic for endemic species like the Sri Lanka White-eye, but the dense canopy makes spotting the small flycatchers much harder than in Victoria Park.

The park opens at 7:00 AM. You need to be standing at the gate right when they unlock it to beat the noisy crowds that arrive by 9:00 AM.

You will definitely want a lens that is at least 400mm. Even though it is a public park, the birds stay high in the dark foliage.

Head straight to the rubbish dump area behind the park stream. It sounds gross, but the insects there attract all the rare flycatchers and thrushes.

Also check the trees near the main entrance for the endemic Yellow eared Bulbul. They are very active in the morning cold.

If you have time, hire a local birding guide. They know exactly which bushes the Kashmir Flycatchers favor every single year.
